It is too simple to talk of a 'rise and fall of strategic planning' (Mintzberg, 1994): many strategic planning practices remain in common use and 'strategic planners' are still widely employed.
General Electric's later Chief Executive Jack Welch was also a Strategy practitioner in the sense of being a self-conscious pioneer of strategic management, particularly through his influential promotion of dialogues at Crotonville and 'town meetings' throughout the company.22 However, the key practitioners in this book are strategy consultants and corporate strategists (often called strategic planners or CSOs and the like).
The third international planning conference took place in Brussels, organized by the European Society of Corporate and Strategic Planners: prominent member organizations were the Associazione Italiana Planificazione Aziendale and the Association Fran�aise pour la Planification d'Entreprise.31 Planning was becoming an international profession.
The term corporate strategist here is a broad one: many of the people I shall describe may have had somewhat different titles such as long-range planner, strategic planner, CSO, or the like.
